Description: Primary production is a quantitative expression of vegetative matter (e.g. harvestable yield) It may be conceptualised as a general expression of the sustainable agricultural production expectation and is a quantification of the long term and basic environmental status of a location under rain fed (i.e. non irrigated) conditions. The concept is particularly useful in overall agricultural planning of a country or region, in objectively assessing the intrinsic environmental biomass production capability between one region and the next, and in comparing the environmental resource potential of one location with others.
